Frequently Asked Questions
How much OB experience can I expect to get at the St. John's program?
Residents typically participate in over 100 deliveries in the first year. Unlike many programs, residents continue to do deliveries while on call throughout the three years of residency. Residents follow their own obstetric patients in the family medicine clinic, providing continuity of care before, during, and after pregnancy. Approximately 60 percent of the OB patients followed in the clinic are considered high risk.
What is the call schedule frequency?
One in five during the first year. One in 12 in the second and third years.
What is included in the resident benefit package?
See the U of M Department of Family Medicine and Community Health benefits.
Where do your graduates go?
Most graduates go on to practice family medicine in metropolitan or rural areas. Other common post-residency positions include, residency faculty, emergency medicine physician, and hospitalist. About a third of recent graduates have gone to small practices.
Is the program accredited?
The program is accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The most recent date of accreditation was 01/22/2007, and the program was accredited for five years.
Is there a research component to the curriculum?
In the second year, residents spend one month on a rotation divided over ENT, podiatry, and clinical research. This is the only required element of research in the curriculum. This experience is organized by the research group at the Phalen Village Clinic. Residents with an interested in research are encouraged to pursue this on electives and during rotations associated with a research area of interest. Several of the program faculty have been involved with research and are available to help get residents started.
